It's long after the fact, but I just learned that John Charters passed away March 4th, 2014. John Charters, along with his wife Barbara, was one of the most important promoters of sailing and racing in our area. He sailed Red Baron, a Tanzer 22, in heady days of sailing in the 70's, 80's and beyond, when the T22 was the largest one design racing class. He served as Commodore of the Baie d'Urfé Yacht Club, President of the Tanzer 22 Class Association, and for many years was Editor of its newsletter, Tanzer Talk. When I served as President of the Tanzer Association, my visits to his chalet in St. Sauveur always felt like sojourns to consult the Pope. He was a warm and generous man who worked tirelessly for the class.
