2013 Montreal Shark Regatta
The Shark regatta was held this year out of PCYC. Jin Frati discusses...
This past week-end (15th June) at the 2013 Coupe
de Quebec counter regatta, 22 sharks
were present.
Saturday, glorious sunny day, the
westerly wind made it really lively,
strong and shifty, the race committee
made the best of it with 4 great
races,Saturday night dinner was great
food but the party for most people did
not last for long, every body felt the
tiredness of a great windy day on the
water.
Sunday first race was correctly
cancelled half way as the wind totally
died, after a some-what long wait, the
wind reappeared from the north east as
predicted, and 2 more races were run
just in time before the 2 pm deadline,
short starting lines made the starts
quite challenging, the competition was
very intense, 12 boats could each have
a top 5 final results, in the end Kevin
Piper on Bedlam was the over all winner
of the Quebec Shark counter
regatta, with the Nuisance team of PCYC,
Carpentier, Bryant, Waldy, taking the
Coupe de Quebec trophy as first Quebec
boat.
As for myself, racing for the first
time with Wife Suzanne and step Daughter
Rebecca in a big event...... it was
great even if Saturday wind was a bit
much for our team and Sunday rain a bit
too wet and cold.
we managed to round the first upwind
leg first or second a couple of times
only to see our lead evaporate, a little
mistake here, a little slow tack or manoeuvre.... was enough to give the
better and more seasoned team a window
of opportunities, which they took with
pleasure. An over early in race 2 put us
last but we made it back nearly to mid
fleet, with our great satisfaction.
All in all a great week-end and lots
of fun.
Thanks to Chris Paynter and Tof
Nichol-Griffith for running such a nice
and smooth event,
Jin Frati
