CYA Women’s National Keelboat Championship
The Hudson Yacht Club hosted this year’s CYA Women’s National Keelboat Championship. In addition to running a flawless event, HYC also took first place. The team on String Theory CAN1421, Nicole Bastet, Jenny Marten and Jessa Chenier finished 1st overall after 6 races.
The J/22 - Pure Class
The Canandaigua Jackrabbit, the Lake George North-East Championship, Rochester’s Jimmy regatta, the Canadian J/22 championship at PCYC, and the North American Championship in Buffalo: having participated in all those events, the Montreal J/22 fleet is active and is growing rapidly. The Hudson Yacht Club now has seven boats and hopes to add two more to the start-line for next season. Top racers in other fleets on the lakes are seriously discussing the opportunity to join the class. Rumors has it that a sharp looking J/22 has even been seen sailing Lake St-Louis.

I was reviewing some old files when I came across this story written by Art de Vries. Sadly I omitted to publish it whilst he was still with us. So I am publishing it now, posthumously, with regrets. This winter the Saint Lawrence Valley Yacht Racing Association (SLVYRA) lost a long-time friend and member of the SLVYRA Executive. Many of us are passionate about, even addicted to sailboat racing and would love to participate in outside regattas. But for many, that passion is often dampened by the lack of budget and time. Attending a regatta, appears to require a lengthy boat preparation, a complex arrangement of crew and logistics, punctuated by a hefty price-tag. On the other hand, participating in an event with over 100 boats and 300 avid sailors is a thrill that’s hard to beat. It is quite simply an unforgettable experience. So what’s the answer? Here is the boat that solves these problems: the J22.

The Value in Sails
Although we don’t spend a lot of money on gas or diesel every sail boat owner will eventually be faced with purchasing a new sail. Sails are the most expensive and confusing maintenance article for a sail boat owner. There are so many different usages and price categories that it is hard to come up with a set of hard and fast rules, but in almost 20 plus years of selling sailboat sails I have noticed some patterns that might be helpful.
New Racing Sails vs Class Rules
When you want to race at a certain level, you need to know the class rules very well. They tell you the do’s and don’t of boat preparation and what the maximum dimensions are for your sails. But in certain area they can be misleading. In fact you are sometime better with a smaller than class sail! The rebirth of the Tanzer 22 #1002 (Part 1)
This is the story of a restoration (my wife would say rebuilding) project I did on a Tanzer 22. I live in Laval, a Montreal suburb and I sail on the Lake of Two-Mountains from the Club de Voile des Laurentides (CVL). At the end of the 2002 season, I was without a boat. I had just sold my Etchells “Coquine” (french for “Naughty Girl”) and I was looking for a boat that would be more practical for the family while still being able to do some racing.

People volunteer their time and make a respectable effort to help us many racing buffs enjoy our favorite pass-time. But did you give some thought as to which number might be the most obvious as you crossed the finish line ten seconds before your arch rival? “But,” you retort, “Everyone knows my boat and who I am”. Yeah!
