RC Challenge Niagara 26 - 2008
Once again this year the CNDM on Lac Deux-Montagnes is hosting the Niagara 26 One Design Regatta. Registration for the event is ABSOLUTELY FREE! The 2 day event is intended to be a friendly reunion of Niagara enthusiast wishing to race and exchange Niagara stories. Five races are scheduled with the last start Sunday before 14:00 hours.
The event is intentionally taking place three weeks prior to Hudson's Labor Day Regatta. To save a round trip, lake St-Louis competitors will be offered to stay at the CNDM untill then.
After the races on Saturday, participants are invited to bring their own picnic or BBQ at the CNDM, where crews will meet to chat about their experience of the day and their love for the boat.
Results and prizes will be awarded Sunday following the last race. Up for grabs is the Challenge Niagara 26 Trophy, meant to be a mark of skill, and to be proudly displayed at the winner's Yacht Club for one year, then brought back to CNDM the following year to be put back in to play.
Although Registration is opened up to the beginning of the first race, we encourage every one to do it sooner so we can assign you a dock at NO FEE.
It's up to you to show Kif Kif, the winner of the last two years races, that he's not King of the Mountain. All that being said, one questions remains: Where is Red Coat?
May the best team win!
Here is a short description of the 2007 event:
While in Europe the Swiss and New Zealander competed over the Aiguillère d'Argent, on the weekend of June 23rd and 24th, and the Club Nautique de Deux-Montagnes presented the Niagara 26 Challenge, a race on one-design keelboats of 8m. On Saturday, in high wind conditions, all teams worked their hearts out completing 3 races at the end of which Kif Kif and Wotan were even on the score board.
Crews met on Sunday morning for the first race of the day in low wind conditions. It was quite a change from the day before. The score remained close as the wind picked up. Moonraker, took advantage of the conditions for a great start. He dominated his opponents and kept ahead of the pack to the finish line. This win didn’t get him the trophy but the Beaconsfield team will leave the event with a smile on their faces and a win in their pockets. With a second and third place for Wotan and Kif Kif the game was far from over.
At 13h 50, ten minutes before the deadline for the last race, Wotan leads the score by 1 point. As the wind had almost completely died down, the teams were discussing whether starting another race was in order. A decision was made and the boats made their way to the starting line for the last race of the competition. Kif Kif and Wotan are now racing for the trophy. Wotan decides to head for the inside of the bay while Kif Kif takes the other side of the course. With the wind shifts Kif Kif’s choice seems to pay off and he takes the lead. Made confident by his win, Moonraker slips by Wotan who sees his chances of winning go up in smoke as Kif Kif crosses the finish line.
Friendly teams, good competitors, an extraordinary ambiance and plenty of wind, makes for a perfect regatta weekend.
Final score:
- Kif Kif
- Wotan
- Moonraker
- March Hare
