This event was initiated and sponsored by Commodore Duggan, one of the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club's most illustrious sailors. Apart from being a famous and professional engineer, Commodore Duggan was an avid racer and competent designer of racing sailboats. His idea for the Duggan Cruising Cup was to have an event in which sailing yachts genuinely designed for cruising would race together. To ensure their cruising credentials, the subject yachts and their crews are required to spend at night somewhere away from the Club overnight before racing the next day.
Over the years this "overnight" has taken place in various locations on the waterway (e.g. Dowker's Island, Point aux Cascades). In recent years this event has been combined with the first fun race pursuit race and raft-up party (usually held in early July). After the party eventually breaks up, those wishing to race the Duggan break off and go to an anchorage overnight in order to qualify for the next day's race. The race is a white sail event and has been run as a pursuit race for many years.
