SLVYRA Trophies for 2009

This year SLVYRA Trophies, some dating back to 1946, will be re-introduced as annual awards in the SLVYRA region. This article details the awards that are being planned for this year.

It is little known in the sailing community that there are a number of SLVYRA Trophies that can be awarded for racing in the Saint Lawrence Valley. Some of these Trophies date back to 1946, and are of historical significance in our community. We have a list of the Trophies, along with their pictures, that are currently on our books in the Trophies tab on this site. (Link here SLVYRA Trophies)

Most of the trophies have been awarded on at best an intermittent basis over many years now. We are intending to rectify this situation and are bringing them back “on line” again, starting this year.

As we do not have the resources to award them all at once, we shall be doing this gradually, and plan to award eight Trophies at the end of this year. Some of the details are still to be finalised for the awards, and the presentation times and places will be determined later in the year. It should be noted that although these are all SLVYRA Trophies, some will be awarded indirectly via other clubs or sailing organisations. The winners will still however be tracked on this site and the details of the award and the winner posted here.

These awards will be tracked on this site, and competitors are encouraged to keep up with the competitions by logging into our site frequently throughout the season.

These Trophies are planned to be awarded during 2009 to the respective winners in the following fleets:

1) Fireballs, the Jolly Widow Trophy,

2) Sharks will be presented with the Gables Court Club Trophy . This is an ongoing annual Trophy award,

3) The J24 fleet with the Deb Trophy

4) The Laser fleet with the Hoskins Trophy,

5) Tanzer 22 fleet will have an award. However, currently the T22 trophy, the Kent Trophy, is missing, and if necessary a new Trophy will be re-deeded for this fleet.

6) The Myrtle Cook Trophy will be presented for the best Women's crew racing

7) A Trophy will be awarded for the overall best PHRF2 performance

8) And a Trophy will be awarded for the best performance from the White Sail Fleet.

Along with the awards will be “keepers” that will be given to the skippers of the winning boats.

Future winners of the trophies will be posted on the SLVYRA site, along with short “bios” where these are available, and pictures, and the files will be maintained so that the history of the Trophy winners may be preserved. We hope to be able to start this part of the site during the course of this year if we are able to identify past and recent winners of any of the Trophies.
